Persuading bumblebees to nest in your garden is possible, but like any good estate agent, you need to know what your customers are looking for. My experience confirms that you need not only the right nest but also the right location, and even then you need to be lucky. If your garden is quite flat, this probably means creating some kind of earth bank. The soil excavated from a pond is a good source of material.

A bought nest, or one you made yourself, can be placed on this bank or even incorporated in it. Alternatively, you could edge the bank with large stones or logs, to make some inviting holes to encourage a queen to investigate. This is at least as likely to work as installing an artificial nest.

Research also shows that queens of surface-nesting bumblebees are attracted by tussocky grass. This isn’t something you can create overnight, so if you let some grass grow long in the hope of attracting bumblebees, be prepared to be patient.
